. pete, where are connecticut state police focusing today as they try to uncover more behind the reasons of adam lanza? >> well, there's a huge wide range of what they're doing, thomas. they're interviewing witnesses still. they haven't even gotten to interviewing the children yet. that's going to be a very difficult process to do, very delicate one is the way they described it. there were two adult survivors. they have the history of the weapons, the history of the ammunition, all of that to look at. now, the hopes were fairly high that they might have a breakthrough with adam lanza's computer that was at his mother's home at the scene where he shot his mother before this all began. but there's some pessimism about that now because he damaged the computer, took the hard drive out of the computer, damaged that further. they knew that when they got it. they thought well, you know, maybe we can get something out of it but i'm told the initial attempts to get information have been unsuccessful. they will obviously try to continue to work at that. but they have yet found no answer to the que

's chris januarying is live for news newtown. chris, i know we just heard there from the connecticut state police but let's talk about what's happening around you today o. >> reporter: think the significant thing we heard from lieutenant vance a few minutes ago was confirming that that part of the investigation is over and some of the bodies have begun to be released to the families. i have talked to many of the religious leaders in this community. of course, they have spent the last 48 hours or so trying to console their congregations and now many of them are planning for funerals. at least eight of them at the local catholic church, one at the local synagogue. we are beginning to hear from the families of the victim -- victims as well. 6-year-old emelie parker's dad held a small news conference last night and robbie parker talked about his daughter. here's what he said. >> we find comfort, reflecting on the incredible person that emelie was and how many lives she was able to touch in her short time here on earth. emelie was bright, creative and very loving. emilie was always willing to t

's michelle franzen joins me now from fairfield, connecticut, where jack pinto's funeral is now underway. michelle. >> well, that's exactly right, andrea. we are here in fairfield about 30 miles from sandy hook where noah posner's burial services are underway. they began about 1:00 today. it is that day, andrea, where we start saying good-bye to all those bright boys and girls, those faces and names that we have learned over the course of the last few days. again, you mentioned the first funerals and services. little noah was 6 years old. he is described by his uncle as smart as a whip, gentle, but having a ram bunkus streak. he leaves behind a twin sister, arielle who was in a separate class and made it out of that school on that day, and he said that his uncle said that noah considered arielle his best friend. they also have an older sister, 8-year-old sophie -- sophia, and the family members said they were all inaccept rabl during that time. in this area from fairfield, connecticut, back to newtown, jack pinto, also 6, his funeral also underway in the next few hours and afternoon. chi

connecticut. he tried to use words to ease the pain and vowed to use political power to address the issue of this violence whether it's guns and culture be remains to be seen if the american public is on board. senator lieberman, good morning to you. i want to get your reaction to the president's speech. >> he was magnificent. he spent a lot of time with the families who lost loved ones and with the first responders. that was very important to them. he was just very comforting and very strengthening. he was himself very moved. secondly i thought his speech was powerful both in evoking our tradition of faith in times of crisis in america and being comforting, but really most significant of all, he had a real resolve. it was deeply appreciated in the high school auditorium. these tragedies must end. he is going to use his power, the power of the presidency to see as best he can that they will end. i was very heartened by that. nobody knows exactly what he is going it do, but this is a big item for him to take on. a big pause that is real. i think he can make a tremendous effect on the futur

is a middle school in a nearby town here in connecticut that's vacant. officials are not saying when students will return to class but when they do, they will be going to class at the middle school. meanwhile, these vigils continue to pop up. these makeshift memorials continue to pop up all over this tiny new england town. there's one that's the most famous here in town at the fire station. the fire station where, of course, on friday the scene of so much grief, of so much sadness where all of the parents went to find out whether their little boy or little girl was alive or dead. that has become since then a makeshift memorial. 26 christmas trees there, balloons and ted by bears and flowers, as well. that's the very latest with regards to the community here in newtown, connecticut. >> thank you. in his emotional remarks, the president asked if we're not, quote, truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out happiness and with purpose and for the first time in a generation we are seeing a call for reasonable gun control legislation. a new "the w

a lot of talk about gun laws since the shootings in newtown, connecticut. one result seems to be increased support for tougher gun laws. 58% of americans polled say they want to see stricter gun laws as opposed to 34% who wants things kept the way they are. compare that to a year ago when only 43% wanted to see stricter laws. it's worth remembering, however, that support for tougher laws often spikes and then fades after mass shootings. of course, the nra always stands in the way of any new or reviewed restrictions, but, of course, we all know that. and we'll be right back. >>> welcome back to "hardball." president obama has a critical period of time at the start of his second term when he can set the course for the next four years. presidents traditionally have less than two years to make a mark in their second terms before their power starts to fade, and president obama is still facing a republican house that acts as though this election of last november never happened. how will he strategize for maximum leverage on the following issues, guns, our relationship with iran.
